A plot to frame him, manipulating Monsignor Alberto Perlasca, the prosecution's main witness.
Cardinal Angelo Becciu, sentenced in the first instance by the Vatican tribunal in the case concerning the confidential funds of the Holy See invested in real estate transactions in London, has denounced Francesca Immacolata Chaouqui, filing a complaint with the Rome Public Prosecutor's Office in which he hypothesizes the crimes of fraud and extortion.
At the heart of the complaint is a series of alleged maneuvers orchestrated by Chaoqui to direct the investigation and influence the trial, to lead to the conviction of Cardinal Pattada. An illicit plan conducted on Italian soil by people external to the Vatican proceedings, in particular by manipulating Monsignor Perlasca.
The signatories of the complaint also include other defendants convicted in the first instance: Enrico Crasso, former financial manager of the Secretariat of State, the official Fabrizio Tirabassi and, in a parallel act, the financier Raffaele Mincione.
The dossier is based on 325 pages of WhatsApp chats, already produced by Mincione's defense in a proceeding before the United Nations. The messages concern exchanges between Chaouqui and Genoveffa Ciferri, an acquaintance of Monsignor Perlasca, the main witness for the prosecution. According to the complainants, Perlasca was pressured to change his version of events. Chaouqui, "pretending to be a magistrate close to the Vatican promoter of justice," acted through Ciferri's mediation.
