The Government is working on a decree to allocate additional resources for reconstruction, compensation and restoration work in Sardinia, Sicily and Calabria, the three regions hit hard in recent days by Cyclone Harry .
This was announced by Palazzo Chigi, during Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's visit to Sicily .
At the last Council of Ministers, which was also attended by Governor Alessandra Todde , the government allocated a total of €100 million for reconstruction. This sum, Palazzo Chigi clarified, "is only an initial response" to the emergency.
The damage caused by the latest wave of bad weather in Sardinia is estimated to amount to at least 200 million euros , but this is only an initial estimate.
"The declaration of a state of emergency for Sardinia, Sicily, and Calabria was a necessary step, but the affected areas need concrete measures now. The €100 million allocation is largely insufficient for damages exceeding €2 billion: it's not even enough to cover the initial needs, let alone ensure proper reconstruction," commented Sardinian Democratic Party Senator Marco Meloni regarding the current allocated resources.
"Minister Musumeci," adds the Democratic Party parliamentarian, "says the money will arrive after the projects. But what is inert and inconclusive is this government, which, faced with a disaster of this magnitude, after having fulfilled the formal requirements and recognized only crumbs, has still not activated the European disaster relief channel, despite knowing it is intended for cases like this. The European Union Solidarity Fund must be requested immediately ," concludes Marco Meloni, "just as every available European lever must be utilized, including the possibility of allocating InvestEU resources to structural interventions against hydrogeological instability."
