At the trial for the alleged falsification of a medical certificate issued to Davide Astori, the Fiorentina captain who died on 4 March 2018 while he was with the team on an away trip to Udine, the Florence court sentenced Giorgio Galanti, former director of sports medicine at Careggi, to one year in prison and Dr. Loria Toncelli and Professor Pietro Amedeo Modesti, also accused of destruction of a true document, to eight months.

The prosecutor Antonio Nastasi had instead asked for three and a half years for Galanti, one year and four months for Modesti, his successor, and three years for Toncelli: the court imposed lighter sentences because it did not recognize the existence of the aggravating circumstance of the surety certificate .

He also rejected the requests for compensation requested by the lawyers for the civil parties , namely Astori's partner Francesca Fioretti and his daughter Vittoria, assisted by the lawyer Alessio Mazzoli, the parents and the brother of the former Cagliari defender.

For the death of Astori Galanti has already been definitively sentenced for manslaughter to one year of imprisonment, with conditional suspension . The sentence, imposed in the first and second degree, was confirmed last March by the Court of Cassation.

According to the prosecution, Astori's death was caused by arrhythmogenic ventricular cardiomyopathy, a pathology that was not diagnosed. Galanti, former director of sports medicine at Careggi and a former sports consultant for Fiorentina, was charged with manslaughter for having issued two certificates of competitive fitness to the player, neglecting, according to the accusation, to carry out some tests that were in contrast with health guidelines .
