A mystery has erupted in Florence over the deaths of a married couple, whose bodies were found by their son in their home on Via Giampaolo Orsini. The victims are antiques dealer Franco Giorgi, 74, and his wife, Gianna Di Nardo, 68.
The house was covered in blood, with traces of it in many rooms, as if there had been a prolonged fight. According to the Carabinieri, they may have been struck by a blade or knife. The exact circumstances are still unclear, and all hypotheses remain open: from a new murder-suicide to a double homicide. A lengthy inspection of the apartment was conducted by the magistrate on duty at the Florence prosecutor's office, Alessandro Piscitelli. The Carabinieri, both with their investigative unit and their forensic unit, were on site to conduct tests.
The alarm was raised around 2:30 PM on Sunday. It was raised by the son who entered the house and discovered his parents dead. Emergency personnel quickly reached the home, an elegant early 20th-century building, home to other families, but by then the Giorgis were dead. The Carabinieri began contacting family members and acquaintances, as well as the neighbors.
The street is a continuous row of buildings on both sides, facing the Gavinana neighborhood, a densely populated area. If attackers were acting from outside, someone might have noticed suspicious movements. If it were a marital dispute that escalated into a stabbing, neighbors—even those in adjacent buildings, not just the doorbells—might have heard screams; the street is quite busy.
Franco Giorgi is a well-known antiques dealer who has held national positions in the field. His gallery is located on Via dei Serragli, in the historic center of Oltrarno, between the Santo Spirito and San Frediano neighborhoods.
