A fire broke out in the heart of Naples, on Via Chaia: the flames engulfed the Sannazzaro Theatre.

Firefighters responded to the scene along with law enforcement and medical personnel. Several people who had suffered smoke inhalation were treated.

The fire destroyed the theatre's dome, which collapsed onto the stalls. Damage was also reported to have occurred to adjacent buildings, from which several residents were evacuated.

Lara Sansone , the theater's owner and artistic director, also arrived on the scene. The niece of actress Luisa Conte burst into tears.

Initial speculation suggests the flames may have been triggered by a short circuit . Firefighters' initial estimates suggest the theater is " completely compromised."

The Sannazzaro theatre, nicknamed the “Bomboniera di via Chiaia”, was designed by architect Fausto Niccolini with a bell-shaped hall with four tiers of boxes and was inaugurated in 1847.
