An eighty-year-old Sardinian, Pietro Scintu, was arrested today in Calabria on charges of killing his wife .
Carmela Bifano , 72 years old, mother of one son, was killed yesterday with several blows to the head, probably with a stone , on a farm in Villaggio Frassa, in the urban area of Corigliano, in the Cosenza area.
It was her husband who raised the alarm, attempting to mislead the investigation . Late in the afternoon, he alerted the police, saying he had found the woman's body lying on the ground with head injuries, adding that he had seen two men walking away.
But investigators' suspicions immediately focused on Scintu, who had spent the previous hours with his wife in the couple's citrus grove.
After initial investigations, investigators from the Rossano Urban Police Station and the Cosenza Flying Squad took him to the police station. This morning, following a lengthy interrogation, the Castrovillari Public Prosecutor's Office issued an arrest warrant .
The autopsy will now determine the cause of death, while the forensic investigations at the site where the body was found have not yet been completed.
