Any decision regarding a possible transplant of the new heart for the boy from Naples, which was made available yesterday evening, " will be made only following an evaluation by the team of experts who will express their opinion today on the transplantability of the young patient admitted to the Monaldi Intensive Care Unit."
The Colli di Napoli Blood Bank announced this. "This wait," it added in a statement, "will have no impact on the donor's heart as it is compatible with the ongoing management of the donation."
Yesterday, the baby's mother was called by health workers at Monaldi Hospital and informed of the availability of the new heart. The family lawyer, Francesco Petruzzi, confirmed that the heart was compatible.
In the previous unsuccessful transplant, the heart was transported in an older container, despite Monaldi Hospital having technologically advanced temperature-controlled cabinets. This is apparently because the staff was not adequately trained to use the more modern equipment. Therefore, the decision was made to use the older container, a box similar to those used to keep drinks cold, which, however, is considered outside the guidelines approved by the Naples prosecutor's office.
