A shipment of 1,500 highly dangerous rudimentary explosive devices, totaling over 255 kilograms of explosives and an estimated market value of over 25,000 euros, sent to Catania by an unsuspecting courier , has been seized by the police.

The alarm was raised by an employee of the shipping company who noticed that some damaged cardboard boxes contained writings referring to fireworks .

Officers from the Bomb Squad of the Police Headquarters' General Prevention and Public Rescue Office responded to the scene and secured the area. They then began their investigation, opening the boxes and finding hundreds of improvised explosive devices , some of which were large. Initial investigations revealed the dangerous nature of the material, consisting of 1,042 "paint bombs" and 522 "Maradona footballs." The Catania Public Prosecutor's Office ordered their immediate destruction.

The cleanup following the destruction of the paper bombs, which took place in an authorized quarry, allowed us to ascertain that the explosion created a crater 5 meters in diameter.

The Catania Police Headquarters emphasizes that such a large quantity of explosives illegally shipped via courier had never before been discovered.
