The Como Public Prosecutor's Office has requested the arrest of Francesco Pagano, the driver of the bus loaded with children who on May 19th rear-ended a truck ahead of him on the Pedemontana motorway in Lomazzo (Como).

The accident killed teacher Domenica Russo, 43, originally from Naples but resident in Sesto Calende. She was on board the bus with her students from the Cazzago Brabbia elementary school (Varese), returning from a visit to the Toy Horse Museum in Grandate. Several of the 30 children on the bus were also injured in the accident.

According to investigations, the bus driver was using his smartphone when he collided with the vehicle in front. Ansa reports this, citing several newspapers.

The investigators' belief stems from the investigations carried out on the phone by a technical consultant for the prosecutor's office, and from at least one image taken by the cameras at the Pedemontana gates in which the driver can clearly be seen holding the phone.

The judge reserved his decision on the arrest request.
