The Carabinieri of the RIS (Italian National Institute of Investigation) are working to shed light on the attack that occurred Thursday evening in Pomezia, just outside Rome, where a makeshift explosive device severely damaged the two cars of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci, parked in front of his home. Only by chance did the explosion cause no casualties.
Investigators are analyzing the remains of the explosive in an attempt to determine the composition of the material used and, possibly, the identity of the perpetrators of the intimidation. According to an initial reconstruction, the device consisted of approximately one kilogram of compressed explosive, placed between two pots in the villa's garden, with the fuse already lit.
A witness reported seeing a hooded person running away shortly before the explosion. Investigations are also underway into a suspicious car that may have been used by the attacker—or attackers—to get away, as well as another vehicle, found nearby, which was found stolen.
The nature of the attack suggests premeditated action: whoever planted the device knew Ranucci would be returning that very day after a period of absence. Law enforcement is also working on this detail, which could provide crucial evidence for the investigation.
At this time, there is no direct link between the stolen car and the attack, but investigations are underway into every possible avenue. Meanwhile, the journalistic community and the public await developments, while concern grows over an act that appears to be a serious attempt to intimidate press freedom.
