During extraordinary checks in Forte dei Marmi (Lucca) this afternoon, the alleged perpetrator of the accident that killed 17-year-old Gabriele Martini last night was arrested . The State Police announced this.

The young man, who was riding a scooter with a friend on the seaside road between Marina di Pietrasanta and Forte dei Marmi in Versilia, was involved in a collision with an SUV with Swiss license plates that had made a U-turn . The occupants of the SUV, apparently three in number, then fled on foot .

One man has been located, a 34-year-old businessman who turned himself in at a patrol checkpoint just as the Carabinieri were chasing him . He is charged with vehicular homicide, aggravated by fleeing the scene. The officers handed him over to the Carabinieri, who took him to the hospital for toxicology tests. The 34-year-old had been spending an evening at Twiga, where the accident occurred.

The 17-year-old's body was taken to the morgue of the Versilia Hospital in Lido di Camaiore (Lucca), at the disposal of the Lucca prosecutor's office.
