A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit the municipality of Marradi, in the province of Florence, this morning at 5.10am: the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Ingv) reports it on its website. The epicenter of the earthquake was located 3 km south-west of the town.

The first was followed by at least eight aftershocks over the next 35 minutes or so.

«The earthquake shocks», explain the Civil Protection of the Metropolitan City of Florence, «frightened the population of Marradi who took to the streets. The municipal operations center has been activated. The operations room, which is monitoring the situation, has not yet received any reports of damage to property or people."

The firefighters explain that there have been many calls to Nue 112 from people asking for information, but at the moment only one request for intervention was made by the Marradi detachment for a check carried out at an RSA facility with a negative outcome.

Meanwhile, schools were closed as a precaution.
