"We were planning an attack on Verona prosecutor Maria Beatrice Zanotti ." This was revealed in court in Verona by collaborator Nicola Toffanin , a member of the Giardino clan, who was heard in the trial arising from the so-called 'Isola Scaligera 2' investigation.
The Corriere del Veneto reports this. As the informer explained to the judges, the goal was in fact to target the magistrate, now employed by the Cagliari Juvenile Prosecutor's Office , who was investigating "some members of our 'Ndrangheta 'locale'," he said, "in investigations into extortion and other crimes."
The plan then fell through, as one of the promoters withdrew from the project. Zanotti, already well-known in Verona for the investigation into former deputy mayor Vito Giacino, was never given a bodyguard. Commenting on the matter, Veneto Region President Alberto Stefani noted that Toffanin's statements raise "deep concern. He added, "I would like to express, on behalf of myself and the Veneto Region, my sincerest sympathy and gratitude to Dr. Zanotti for the work she carries out with professionalism, courage, and a high sense of duty."
