They received stolen jewelry from Fabio Capello's wife, and were all convicted. The first-instance verdict was handed down today by Judge Roberto Falessi of the Busto Arsizio (Varese) court. He granted the requests of Public Prosecutor Laura Martello and sentenced the four defendants to terms ranging from two and a half years to three years.

The story began in June 2017 when the former AC Milan, Juventus, and Real Madrid manager and his wife, on their return from Germany, forgot a trolley on a sidewalk at Malpensa Airport. The luggage contained over €240,000 in valuables, including Cartier watches and bracelets, platinum and diamond jewelry, a Buccellati ring, pearl necklaces, two iPhones, an Apple Watch, and even a coral Buddha.

The former coach realized he'd forgotten it when he was already in a taxi heading to Lugano. He called the airport, but the suitcase worth thousands of euros was gone. The suitcase full of valuables had meanwhile been taken by a parking garage employee, who, along with his boss, opened it at the company. The two, finding themselves with a veritable treasure, set about selling it. Capello, meanwhile, had filed a complaint.

Carabinieri officers from the Gallarate (Varese) branch, coordinated by Public Prosecutor Nadia Calcaterra, were able to reconstruct the entire chain of events using airport video surveillance footage. The perpetrators of the theft chose alternative prosecutions: the employee pleaded guilty to five months, while the parking lot owner—also accused of stealing a car parked in his own parking lot—was sentenced to one year and a €600 fine under a fast-track trial. The case of a fifth fencing contractor was dismissed in Novara due to territorial jurisdiction. The other four suspects were convicted in the first instance today for receiving stolen goods.
