Also this year Sardinia is competing in the “ItalianTree of the Year 2024” competition, organized by the GiantTrees Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture.
In the last edition, the Island won first place in Italy and third in Europe with the majestic wild olive tree of Santu Baltolu, known as “The Patriarch” with over 3 thousand years of life.
Competing for the title are trees from the four Italian macro-regions: North, Center, South and Islands. Representing the Islands in 2024 is the Urzulei yew, the largest in Sardinia with its 5 meters of circumference and 17 meters of height.
It is located in the limestone formations of the Supramonte of Urzulei, in the Matari area, at an altitude of approximately 900 metres above sea level.
The contest, which started yesterday, will last until November 20. The public will decide which tree of the year 2024 will be voted online. You need to access the Foundation's website (https://www.gianttrees.org/it/italian-tree-of-the-year-2024/finale#) and everyone can express their preference by assigning a point to their favorite specimen every day. You access the tree's page, click on "vote for this tree" and enter your email address in the appropriate field. In order for the vote to be valid, you will need to access your email inbox and, in the incoming message, click on "confirm vote".
The competition aims to promote Italian monumental trees, selecting the botanical wonders registered in the list of Italian Monumental Trees (AMI). Currently, almost 5,000 specimens are registered in Italy, over 400 in Sardinia.
