"UNESCO recognition will be a catalyst for growth for the island's supply chains and an opportunity to consolidate Sardinia's role as a symbol of quality, rural identity, and products that tell the story of the Mediterranean." This is according to a press release from Coldiretti Sardinia , signed by its president and director, Battista Cualbu and Luca Saba . "Italian cuisine, today a 'world heritage,'" they add, "also carries a piece of Sardinia with it, and the world is ready to welcome it."
An award for Sardinia – "This global recognition honors not only Italian cuisine, but also regions like Sardinia, which daily preserve tradition, quality, and healthy agriculture. Our products, from cheeses to grains, from wines to olive oil, are a cultural heritage even before their economic significance," add Cualbu and Saba. "UNESCO certifies what the world already knows: the value of Italian and Sardinian food, as well as the agricultural model that supports it. Now we must continue to defend Made in Italy and Made in Sardinia, combat Italian-sounding products, and further enhance our producers, who are the true custodians of this wealth."
Economic impact – According to a Coldiretti/Censis survey, 94% of Italians see UNESCO recognition as a major development opportunity for the national economy. Indeed, Italian cuisine is currently worth €251 billion worldwide, a 5% increase over the previous year (Coldiretti analysis based on Deloitte Foodservice Market Monitor 2025 data). The United States and China together account for over 65% of global consumption, confirming the growing strength of the Italian food brand.
