UNESCO gives its first green light to Italian cuisine as a World Heritage Site . This morning, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization released its technical assessment of Italian cuisine's nomination dossier: UNESCO, the body of global experts, recommends inscribing Italian cuisine on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This is the first fundamental opinion that will be submitted to the final political decision, which will be taken by the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee which will meet in New Delhi, India, from 8 to 13 December .

If the technical judgment is confirmed in December, Italian cuisine would be the first cuisine in the world to obtain UNESCO recognition as a whole .

"The technical assessment published today tells us that the dossier is well-crafted and consistent with UNESCO's objectives," emphasizes Pier Luigi Petrillo, professor at Luiss Guido Carli and curator of the nomination dossier. "However, we must keep in mind that this initial yes should not create illusions, because the Intergovernmental Committee, which will meet in India in December, has the opportunity to completely review the decision ."

Among the decisions published today by the United Nations are those relating to Swiss yodel, Cuban son, Japanese origami, Cypriot dessert wine, and the Passion of Christ in Mexico.
