The third edition of the Istat permanent census brings out the updated data on the population in Italy: as of 31 December 2020, the reference date, the residents in our country are 59,236,213, with a decrease of 0.7% compared to 2019 (-405,275 people).
The institute explains that the decline "is mainly attributable to the demographic dynamics between 1 January and 31 December 2020: in fact, the balance due to the total demographic movement (natural balance plus migration), inferable from the personal data sources, recorded 362,507 units in less".
All the regions are involved, in particular in the South: -1.2% in Southern Italy and -1% in the Islands; almost everywhere, with the exception of the autonomous provinces of Bolzano and Trento, the decrease is above all the recessive demographic dynamics of 2020. Only Tuscany is an exception.
The biggest drops are recorded in Molise (-2.1%), Calabria (-1.8%), Campania (-1.5%) and Sardinia (-1.3%). As of December 31, 2020, the foreigners registered are 5,171,894; therefore 132,257 more than the previous year but become about 150 thousand more as a result of a "statistical adjustment".
THE ROLE OF THE PANDEMIC - "The new minimum record of births (405 thousand) and the high number of deaths (740 thousand) aggravate the negative natural dynamic that characterizes our country - explains Istat -. The deficit of 'natural replacement' between births and deaths (natural balance) in 2020 reaches -335 thousand units, lower value, since the unification of Italy, only to the record one of 1918 (-648 thousand), when the 'Spanish' epidemic helped to determine almost the half of the 1.3 million deaths recorded in that year ".
