"We are starting to reap the benefits of a long and tiring work, conducted in the front row by Sardinia, which is rightly recognized as driving the rights of the island regions and the over 20 million citizens who reside there , equal to 4.6% of the total population of the Union. In recent years we have been, among the European islands, among those most committed to claiming a new approach in the formulation of EU policies and legislation ”.

This was stated by Christian Solinas regarding the vote, scheduled for Tuesday in the Strasbourg Parliament, of the motion with which for the first time the European Parliament will undertake an institutional commitment that recognizes the specificity and disadvantages of insularity .

"It is not the goal, but it is an important step", underlines the Sardinian governor who also receives the thanks of Younous Omarjee , rapporteur of the law.

Leader of the Partnership of the peripheral island regions of the Mediterranean - consisting of Sardinia, Balearic Islands, Corsica, Crete, Gozo, Ionian Islands - Sardinia has brought the island question to the center of the work of the Conference on the future of Europe, and participated as a protagonist in the definition of the regulatory framework to address the needs of island territories.

"Tuesday - underlines Solinas - represents an important moment, for which the Region of Sardinia has given a fundamental contribution by helping to provide the tools to decipher what today is the most incisive message: island regions are less developed than continental ones of their Member State, and have a lower GDP per capita. These characteristics, combined with the multiple and permanent natural disadvantages, must be taken into account in EU policies ”.
