An invitation to support the battle for insularity in the Constitution is contained in the letter sent by Michele Cossa - president of the Special Commission - to the European parliamentarians elected in Italy.

"The attention of the European Parliament is, for island regions, of vital importance, and the approval of the Omarjee Resolution (the" Pact for the Islands ") will pave the way towards a European island policy capable of identifying specific, calibrated instruments on the peculiarity of the island condition ”, underlines Cossa.

At stake is the future "of 8 million Italians living in the islands (20 million European citizens living in the islands) and which will materialize on 7 June when the European Parliament examines the motion for a resolution" on the islands of the EU and cohesion policy: current situation and future challenges "(2021/2079 (INI)), proposed by the president of the Commission for regional development, Younous Omarjee.

An issue that sees Sardinia, Sicily and Italy engaged at the forefront: "The Italian Parliament is about to approve the constitutional provision aimed at giving the islands a level playing field with respect to the mainland , for the first time in republican history following a legislative initiative of popular initiative - reads the letter - An epochal reform for the citizens of the Islands, the effects of which cannot fail to reverberate also on the European system, and which must see us Italians as the most convinced supporters of this process ".

"The permanent absence of physical connections with the mainland determines dependence on sea and air transport, a serious lack of infrastructure, a greater incidence of costs for goods and services, a general economic fragility. Problems that worsen for the smaller islands, and in particular on the Sicilian and Sardinian ones, which are affected by the drama of the 'double' insularity ", concludes Cossa in his appeal.
