The locusts against Sardinian pecorino; synthetic meat against local ham; the locusts against the wild island pork sausage; the wine with the "traffic light" against Cannonau.

These are - according to Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna - some of the "food clashes" that could develop in the short term due to the controversial indications of the European Union on food products.

Threats that could also hit the heart of the Sardinian agri-food sector , represented by 2,909 artisan businesses (1,244 in the food sector, 28 in the beverage sector, 1,637 in the
catering) that employ 9,871 people and boast 41 certified products, with an economic impact of 482 million euros, which places the island in seventh place in Italy.

"In fact, there are four fronts opened up by the European Union - explains Marco Rau , regional food delegate of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna - namely the introduction of insects in our dishes, the opening to synthetic foods, the use of alimentary (nutriscore) and finally the adoption for spirits, including wine, of the label with the words “It seriously harms health”».

For this reason, Rau underlines, « there is a lot of concern in the Sardinian artisan food sector because the European Commission, also in this case, sees everything through the lens of the multinationals to the detriment of artisanal productions . as these proposals represent new and disconcerting ideas to kill, or at least limit, the excellence of Made in Italy and give the coup de grace to our farmers and food artisans, all in the name of bogus "health" and "green" ideologies ” that they want to impose on our food consumption, not only to the detriment of traditions, but without having any awareness of the serious economic as well as cultural consequences of such decisions».
«Faced with these numbers - continues the delegate of Confartigianato - our concern is well founded that these proposals end up penalizing one of our main assets, i.e. traditional products (PDO, PGI and TSG) and the wisdom of the Italian food communities of artisans and peasants . For this reason we will oppose by all means the idea of "novelfood" (in this context already admitted by the EU the larvae of the mealworm, the locusts, the crickets and the larvae of the lesser mealworm, ed. note) made of insects and synthetic foods which, as a professional in the sector, I believe are in contrast with the hygiene standards and controls required by the European Union».
«Furthermore - concludes Rau - we fear that these proposals represent a real offensive against the biodiversity of food and food traditions in particular of our country. So we ask that the Sardinia Region and the National Government also join us in defending Made in Italy ».
