"Family, from the Story of the Baron" doesn't depict the story of the Baron in the Trees , nor does it tell the story of Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò, who climbed trees at the age of twelve and never came down again. Instead, the show tells the story of Cosimo's family, namely those who remained under the trees, waiting for him, wondering how it could have happened that he suddenly gave up everything to start a completely new life, far from them.
The debut is scheduled for Saturday, November 8th at 8:30 pm at the Teatro Astra in Sassari , the birthplace of the writer's mother, botanist Eva Mameli Calvino. On November 13th, the show will be performed at the TsE Teatro del Segno in Cagliari, again at 8:30 pm.
Written and directed by Simone Gelsomino and sponsored by the Fondazione di Sardegna, the show explores the family as a primary nucleus, but above all as an ambivalent place: on the one hand, a shell of protection, care, and tenderness; on the other, a transmission of trauma—often involuntary—or a place where our dreams are held captive.
A show with an 18th-century aesthetic (thanks to Gelsomino's sets and the costumes, a collaboration with Manuel Casati), yet sociologically relevant thanks to the contemporary perspective—not only of the director—of a cast far removed from the more conventional theater, including Ignazio Chessa, Antonella Masala, Chiara Murru, and Lello Olivieri. The sound design is by Serena Vargiu.
