Having a precise number is impossible. But to give an idea of how much Covid is entering the classrooms, in the last week alone the ASL of Cagliari has registered 279 positive students. Infections in the 0-19 range now also represent 30% of the total in Sardinia. A growing fear that has led families to storm the Cagliari hub for the first day of vaccinations for the age group 5-11.
ASL of Cagliari
Excluding the cases of Capoterra (16 quarantined classes for a total of 80 positive children) and Villaputzu-Muravera (22 classes in Dad for 73 students) in the territory of the Asl of Cagliari there are 32 classes under surveillance (at least 1 positive pupil; 16 classes of primary, 4 of secondary first grade and 12 of second grade). On the other hand, there are 29 quarantined classes (14 in childhood, 8 in primary school, 5 in lower secondary school and 2 in second grade) where 90 positive pupils were found. In total, therefore, from 11 December to today there are at least 279 positive students.
"Quarantined classes"
"We have several classes in quarantine - underlines the Councilor for Education of the Municipality of Cagliari, Rita Dedola - What we are observing is that while before we had one, two cases within the same class, now there are 20 positive students together. Last week we recorded a notable increase, while in recent days more contained numbers ».
"Fundamental vaccine"
“Having started vaccinating children is very important; the virus is looking for someone to infect and, excluding no vaxes, that unprotected segment of the population remains. Add to this that the children have a more promiscuous life and this only increases the infections - underlines the allergist Stefano Del Giacco, university professor and medical director at the University Hospital of Cagliari -. Parents' concerns about vaccination are understandable but there are no valid reasons not to do it, it is a vaccine like any other. Add to this that the side effects are minimal, insignificant compared to children who have died from Covid or those who enter intensive care ».
"Enough with Dad"
In addition to health, Stefano Del Giacco underlines the importance of vaccination also for school, "we have more and more quarantined classes and this creates a logistical problem for them and their families". Of course, children have less severe Covid symptoms than adults, "but this does not mean that they should not be protected". The immunologist also recalls how «the protected child has less chance of infecting family members. In fact, lately we have been witnessing parents or relatives who have been infected by their young children ». In short, Stefano Del Giacco concludes: «Vaccinating them is fundamental for an educational, social and practical discourse. We have always trusted pediatricians and family doctors and they all recommend vaccination ».
