In the last year in Sardinia, approximately 85,000 bags of blood were collected, but to reach self-sufficiency at least 110,000 would be needed. Of these, 85,000, over 80% were collected thanks to the commitment of the Avis offices present in the regional territory. These are the data highlighted today, on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day .
The president of the regional Avis, Vincenzo Dore, thanks the donors of Sardinia. «Today we celebrate the people who have chosen to donate part of themselves to others», he underlines. « A gesture that is renewed every day throughout the Island and that represents an irreplaceable bulwark of humanity, civic sense and responsibility . It is thanks to them that so many patients can face life-saving treatments, interventions and therapies».
During the recent national conference promoted by Avis, an encouraging figure emerged at the Italian level: new donors between 18 and 25 years of age have grown by over 5% compared to the previous year, exceeding 75,000 . "The contribution of the new generations is precious but not enough", comments Dore. "The challenge now is to retain those who are approaching donation for the first time, ensuring that it becomes a conscious and lasting habit. In the summer, like every year, needs increase and supplies risk being reduced: this is why it is important to act immediately".
