Hydrogen, Sardinia pilot region: 140 million for the Sassari-Alghero-airport railway section
The project involves the supply of five trains and the construction of a production and storage plant
Sardinia pilot region of the energy transition towards hydrogen.
Governor Christian Solinas announced the financing of the new railway connection with green hydrogen trains Alghero centro ‐ Alghero airport, with the construction of a hydrogen production and storage plant in the airport area.
The operation is part of the activities financed as part of the allocation of resources of the National Plan for complementary investments to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The Region had presented in December 2020 a proposal to connect the cities of Alghero and Sassari with the Fertilia airport with a branch from the existing railway line.
The request amounted to 140 million euros, which was fully funded.
The infrastructural intervention is completed with a hydrogen production and storage plant as well as with the supply of five trains needed to guarantee railway operation on the Sassari / Alghero / Alghero airport railway line.
In detail, the investment involves the construction of the new railway connection with a length of approximately 6.7 kilometers, the service of which will be carried out with hydrogen-powered trains of the latest conception (also included in the loan).
Furthermore, the construction of a green hydrogen production plant (ie produced from renewable energy sources) is planned, which will allow the start of the energy transition in our island.
"An important step towards an energy transition that will lead us to live in an increasingly green and increasingly innovative land in the field of high technology", said Solinas, "we have great planning, rewarded also on this occasion, which can bring Sardinia to assume the role of experimental hub for the rest of the country and for Europe. We can quickly produce green hydrogen from renewable sources, with an investment in technology and innovation that we are ready to make with our excellences such as Crs4 and Sardegna Ricerche, providing important know-how ".
"An example of efficiency and innovation that gives Sardinia a role of great prestige on the national scene", declared the Councilor for Transport Giorgio Todde, "and which will be the starting point for an increasingly modern and compatible local transport system with environmental protection. We will always focus strongly on research and high technology applied to transport ".
