Of partly Scottish, Irish, Swedish and German descent, Kilmer began his career in the theatre. In the mid-1980s, after starring in Top Secret! (1984), Genius (1985) and then Top Gun (1986) in the role of “Iceman”, alongside Tom Cruise, he became one of the highest paid and most sought-after actors in Hollywood.
In the 1990s he played Jim Morrison in The Doors , Doc Holliday in Tombstone, Batman in Batman Forever , Chris Shiherlis in Heat and Simon Templar in the 1997 version of The Saint.
His last film was the Top Gun sequel, Maverick, in 2022.
