2024 was the year of Tony Effe: confirmation also comes from the annual Fimi/Gfk charts that consecrate his Icon, released on March 15th and quadruple Platinum, the best-selling album of the year. Among the singles in the lead is Mahmood with Tuta Gold. In general, the music market of 2024 closes with an extremely positive balance, between significant data for streaming and a significant increase in the female presence in the Top of the Music by Fimi/GfK charts, which include all existing sales and listening channels (physical, digital, premium and free audio streaming, video streaming).
A year that has seen important goals achieved thanks to a greater diversification of the musical offering - with the result, for example, of pop moving closer to the highest steps of the various weekly podiums - and to the increasingly central role of Italian and international artists. The charts see the confirmation of urban and a new female advance.
In the albums, behind Tony Effe is Geolier with Dio lo sa, followed by Anna with Vera Baddie, who thus ends the long absence from the podium by a female artist (the last time dates back to 2018) with her nine weeks at the top (best result for an artist in 2024). Among the Singles, Rose Villain with Come un tuono (feat. Guè) is in second place, confirming the growing female presence in the Italian music scene; third is Geolier, with the Sanremo song I p' me, tu p' te. In the CD, Vinyl and Cassette charts, Kid Yugi conquers the throne with I nomi del diavolo and Lazza is in second place with Locura; third is the international The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift, demonstrating the global success of female artists.
The promising data on the growing female protagonism in the music market - in addition to having been anticipated last month by Spotify Italy, which since 2021 has recorded a 110% increase in songs by Italian female artists included in international editorial playlists - is also confirmed by the number of female artists present in the Top 20 Fimi Albums 2024, which has grown by 300% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, the domination of the local repertoire continues in 2024, which conquers 100% of the Top Ten Albums and Singles and covers 84% of the entire Top 100 Albums (+5% compared to 2023).
2024 saw a total of 1,749 certifications awarded, divided between 267 albums, 7 compilations and 1,475 singles - including a diamond, the maximum certification: it hadn't happened since 2017 for a single - testifying to the dynamism of the music market, naturally driven by the streaming phenomenon. In 2024, the segment reached almost 95 billion streams, including premium and free, for an overall growth of 31.1% compared to 2023 ; in the last week of the year, the overall streaming volume exceeded 2 billion weekly listens. A historic milestone, since the threshold of one billion had been exceeded for the first time only in 2021.
Albums with over 10 million streams (premium + free) were 923 in 2024 (+130 compared to 2023), compared to 142 albums with physical sales/downloads exceeding 10,000 copies in 2013, confirming the profound change in the ways of consuming music over the last decade. At the same time, the physical segment remains stable and continues to maintain its relevance with a growth of 15.7% in vinyl compared to 2023, and thus distributing the weight of the formats: 57.8% vinyl, 40.5% CD, 1.7% cassettes and other physical formats.
