Extremely high electricity bill for Sardinians. In 2024, with an average consumption per family of 2,677 kWh and an expense of 903 euros per year, the Island is at the top of the national consumption ranking .
The analysis is by the experts at Facile.it, who explain how the balance of the electric meter has reached 14% more than the Italian average . Very high consumption that is partly explained by the absence in many areas of the region of heating with city gas, a situation that is compensated by using electrical devices that have a strong impact on consumption.
Behind Sardinia is the other island, Sicily, where last year families spent an average of 848 euros, with a declared consumption of 2,445 kWh. Then Veneto, an average bill of 833 euros and consumption of 2,386 kWh.
"Looking at the trend of the indices we see that already from the second half of last year the prices of raw materials have started to grow again and 2025 has started with alarming values that, according to forecasts, could increase further - comment the experts of Facile.it - For this reason, today more than ever, those who are in the free market must pay attention to choosing the right supplier , a fundamental action to avoid spending more than necessary".
And yesterday morning at Palazzo Chigi a summit was held precisely to pass a decree that addresses the high cost of bills by supporting businesses and families in difficulty , also by expanding the group of beneficiaries of the social bonus. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni participated with ministers Giancarlo Giorgetti (Economy), Gilberto Pichetto Fratin (Environment) and Tommaso Foti (European Affairs).
The opposition is pushing, but the measure will need at least a couple of weeks . Among the issues to be resolved are compliance with European rules on state aid and finding the resources for coverage. Just broadening the scope of the social bonus, as done in the past, would cost around 1.5 billion euros .
There are several hypotheses. The first is to eliminate the difference between the cost of gas on the European reference market (the TTF index of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange) and that on the Italian wholesale market (the Psv index) . On the latter, the price of gas can be higher by up to 2 euros per megawatt hour. This move would lead to an immediate reduction in bills, including electricity bills, which are partly linked to the trend in the price of methane .
Also on the table, to help businesses, is the strengthening of energy release (the granting of electricity at controlled prices to energy-intensive companies that build new generation capacity from renewable sources) and the compensation of the European ETS tax on CO2 emissions charged to energy producers.
