The future of Sardinia's agricultural sector depends on dialogue. With this goal in mind, the Green Table opened today in Cagliari, a new forum for discussion between the Regional Department of Agriculture and the primary sector's trade associations.

The meeting was led by Councilor Francesco Agus, who met officially with representatives of the agricultural sector for the first time to discuss the sector's challenges and development prospects.

The meeting marked the beginning of a process aimed at placing debate at the heart of regional political decisions.

This approach is considered essential in a period marked by profound economic and environmental uncertainty. "On such a strategic issue, discussion must be the basis of every political decision," Agus stated, emphasizing the need to identify shared solutions and maintain a united front among the island's diverse production sectors.

During the meeting, several critical issues affecting the agricultural sector were highlighted: from the linear cuts in Common Agricultural Policy resources at the European level to the effects of geopolitical tensions that are refocusing the issue of food sovereignty. Ample space was also given to the consequences of climate change, with particular reference to drought and chronic water scarcity.

There was no shortage of discussion on the topic of infrastructure, where Sardinia continues to suffer from historical delays and an often obsolete network.

On this front, the councilor recalled the investments planned by the Region through the Development and Cohesion Fund plan agreed with the State, describing them as unprecedented in scale.

Finally, the Green Table highlighted the need for a structured discussion on short-, medium-, and long-term interventions to strengthen the agricultural system and help combat depopulation. "Depopulation is fought by creating jobs and opportunities, especially for young people," Agus concluded, identifying this as one of the main challenges the Green Table will address.
