Great tennis returns to Cagliari with the third edition of the Sardegna Open, an ATP 175 Challenger. It begins on April 27, with the final on May 3 on the courts of the Cagliari Tennis Club in Monte Urpinu : work is still underway on the Central Court, which will be ready for the start of the tournament.

The entry list will have to wait until the first week of April: "It will be a top-level tournament," assures Angelo Binaghi . "In the past, the cutoff was at ATP number 77. We'll try to bring many Italians ." For the FITP president, "it will be a level equivalent to an ATP 250," the "second most important tournament in Italy" after Rome, considering that the Finals, despite being held in Turin, are not an Italian tournament.

The tournament comes at the height of the clay-court season, between the 1000m courses in Madrid and Rome : "The location is an extraordinary opportunity for the athletes. At this stage of the season, the best on the circuit compete on European clay, and in past editions we've already seen players like Musetti, Fritz, and Shelton compete on the island , who have since become established among the world's leading players."

Ticket and season ticket pre-sales have begun, and schools will be involved again this year. Students will be able to attend the matches in the morning accompanied by their teachers. The most important matches will be broadcast live on SuperTennis.

Last year the tournament was not held, in the last edition of 2024 Mariano Navone prevailed in the final over Lorenzo Musetti .

This morning's press conference at the Tennis Club's Central Court was attended, in addition to Binaghi, by the mayor of Cagliari Massimo Zedda, the regional councilors (Tourism and Public Education) Franco Cuccureddu and Ilaria Portas, the Cagliari City Councilor for Sport Giuseppe Macciotta, and the Tournament Director Martin Vassallo-Arguello .

"This is a significant event from a tourism perspective and a showcase for the promotion of sports in Sardinia," commented Councilor Portas. "We host the second-largest tennis tournament in Italy, and tennis is one of the most popular sports in Italy and around the world. Therefore, it is one of the major sporting events we support with the call for proposals published in recent days," emphasized Cuccureddu.

In over seventy years of activity, TC Cagliari has hosted events of great international importance, including six Davis Cup matches – a feat against Sweden in 1990, signed by Paolo Canè against Mats Wilander – and a Billie Jean King Cup final (at the time still Fed Cup), won in 2013 by the Italy of Roberta Vinci, Flavia Pennetta, Francesca Schiavone, Sara Errani and Karin Knapp against Russia.
