Goodbye to Marina Cicogna, the "countess" of Italian cinema.
She died in Rome, aged 89.
Born in 1934, to the counts Cesare Cicogna Mozzoni and Annamari Volpi of Misurata, she was the granddaughter of Giuseppe Volpi of Misurata, "inventor" of the Venice Film Festival.
In his career he produced masterpieces such as "Teorema" by Pier Paolo Pasolini, "Metti, una sera a cena" by Giuseppe Patroni Griffi and "Investigation of a citizen above all suspicion" by Elio Petri (which won the Oscar she, however, did not go to collect it in Los Angeles due to fear of flying).
Friend, among others, of Luchino Visconti, Gianni Agnelli, Maria Callas and Aristotle Onassis, she also made headlines for her private life, such as when she had a flirtation with Alain Delon and a long love story with the actress Brazilian Florinda Bolkan.
In addition to being a producer, she was also an actress and screenwriter.
The New York Times called her “the first great Italian film producer” and “one of the most powerful women in European cinema”.
