Even at Cop29 in Baku, the Italian Government reiterated its desire to close coal-fired power plants in 2025, with the exception – as already announced at the G7 in Venaria – of Sardinia, for which there will be an extension to 2028.
Right during the International Climate Conference in the capital of Azerbaijan , twenty-five nations committed to "rapidly reduce carbon emissions" , in the hope of pushing other countries to do the same. Leading the "consortium" is the United Kingdom, while the other nations that have joined the appeal are, in addition to Italy, France, Germany, Canada, Australia and then, in alphabetical order, Austria, Belgium, Colombia, Cyprus, Denmark, Ethiopia, Malta, Morocco, Norway, Netherlands, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Uganda, Uruguay and Vanuatu. The United States and the most populous countries, starting with China and India, are missing.
In particular, the signatories have committed not to include any new coal power plants without carbon capture in their future climate plans. However, the commitment does not oblige them to stop mining or exporting coal.
