British actor Bernard Hill, best known for his roles in Titanic and The Lord of the Rings, has died at the age of 79. In James Cameron's Oscar-winning film he was Captain Edward Smith, in Peter Jackson's trilogy he played King Théoden.

Thanks to these two roles , he held the distinction of having starred in two of the only three films in the history of cinema that won 11 Oscars, namely Titanic and the third chapter of the Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King.
With over 40 years of experience, he made his film debut in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi (1982), then starred in Roger Donaldson's The Bounty (1984). Again: Mountains of the Moon (1990) by Bob Rafelson, Spirits in the Dark (1996) by Stephen Hopkins (1996), Until Proven Otherwise (1999) by Clint Eastwood, A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999) by Michael Hoffman , The Scorpion King (2002) by Chuck Russell, Wimbledon (2004) by Richard Loncraine, The Valkyrie (2008) by Bryan Singer (2008), and Golden Years (2016) by John Miller.
