Sardinia is the region where the fewest children are born, just 7,231 in 2023, and it is a land of only children, given that 56% of couples who want to become parents do not go beyond the first heir.

No other region in Italy has such a high percentage, and if 37 couples out of a hundred have two children, only a meager 7% (also the lowest in the country) bring three into the world, and sometimes even more.

A trend, certified by the latest report by Sardegna Statistiche, which coupled with the decline in fertility is an even more timely and dramatic snapshot of what is happening on the Island. Those who would like to help fill those cradles are not in a position to do so. And so they limit themselves to just one child.

A structural condition that " should be addressed starting from the internal areas , from the countries where, it is true, many people leave, but there are also those who choose to stay and those who return, perhaps after years of working abroad", claims Marisa Fois, historian of emigration and researcher at the University of Geneva.
