Gianfranco Zola “ambassador of Italian sport in the world”.

Inigo Lambertini, Italy's ambassador to London, presented the plaque to the Oliena-born playmaker yesterday, during a sporting evening held at the embassy in anticipation of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

"His legacy, passion, and leadership continue to inspire Italian sport around the world," reads the citation for the honor.

Zola, a sports director, football coach, and former Italian footballer, is vice president of the Italian Football League. A Chelsea legend, Zola is considered one of the best Italian strikers of his generation. After starting out in Sardinia, he played for Napoli, Parma, and Chelsea, before returning to the island to end his career with Cagliari. At international level, he won a UEFA Cup, a Cup Winners' Cup, and two UEFA Super Cups.
