The dispute between Senate President Ignazio La Russa and Italy's national team coach Gennaro Gattuso continues.
The back-and-forth began after the Azzurri coach's comments on the protests following the Italy-Moldova match: "The fans' protests are shameful, I'm sorry for what I heard today . This isn't the time to tell the players to go to work: we need to stay united, because the team is struggling on the pitch, and I can't accept hearing 500 fans protesting away from home." The coach's words were followed by those of the highest official in the country : "You can't call a spectator who boos 'shameful.' Gattuso is right when he says that, in light of our hopes of reaching the World Cup, we need to unite and support the national team, but even booing from spectators can be a stimulus, as long as it's not violent."
Now, on the eve of the match against Norway, Gattuso returns to the matter in a press conference: " I respect what La Russa says, but I don't know where he was that night. He certainly wasn't at the stadium, and he didn't even see it on TV. There were people wishing him dead , there were people saying he was coming to Coverciano, that we had to go to work. I agree that the boos should be accepted," Gattuso concluded, "but they weren't boos; they were much more serious and couldn't be accepted."
