According to reports, Maurizio Gasparri will resign today as Forza Italia group leader in the Senate.

A meeting of the Forza Italia senators has been called for this afternoon , and the agenda will include the question and selection of a successor. Senator Stefania Craxi is in pole position.

Even within Forza Italia, after the referendum on justice held in memory of Silvio Berlusconi, the day of reckoning is upon us.

The letter

Pressure on Gasparri had been exerted through a letter signed by 20 prominent party members—including ministers Paolo Zangrillo and Elisabetta Casellati—which, in summary, stated that for the sake of party unity, it was appropriate to replace the group leader in Palazzo Madama, namely Maurizio Gasparri.

He had been given 48 hours to manage his exit strategy. The most likely candidate to replace him is Stefania Craxi, currently chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.
