The Gulf War began five days ago and is already costing every Cagliari household €480 a year . This is a massive blow to spending and transportation, and it doesn't take into account the likely impact on utility bills.

The accounts in the pockets of the Sardinians are kept by Adiconsum Cagliari , which speaks of a real "state of emergency".

The consumer association's research department analyzed today's data from the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy (average price of self-service diesel €1.887 per liter, and gasoline €1.762) and cross-referenced it with regional consumption patterns and ISTAT transport spending indices. The impact on the island is higher than the national average, so much so that it paints "an unprecedented picture of transport inflation for Sardinia."

Considering an average annual mileage of 15,000 km, the direct cost for each Sardinian family is approximately 215 euros . Then there are the indirect costs, due to the transport of goods, 85% of which in Sardinia are transported by road. The increase in fuel costs will have a knock-on effect on retail prices, which will impact 265 euros per family per year, 130 of which will be for basic necessities .

The sum of these two factors leads to an extra annual expense of 480 euros for each family unit.

"Today's official figures, with diesel fuel approaching €1.89 per liter, confirm our fears: we are facing a silent attack on citizens' savings . In a situation like Cagliari and its province, where the car is often the only means of transportation and where the prices of goods are already burdened by the costs of island living, this scenario is unsustainable. These data are not opinions, but the result of rigorous analysis based on ministerial sources. As Adiconsum Cagliari, we call for immediate monitoring to block any attempts at speculation along the supply chain ," says Adiconsum Cagliari President Simone Girau.

This is the current scenario, which could become even bleaker: if fuel prices were to stabilize at 2.15 euros per litre, the overall impact – both direct and indirect – would exceed 750 euros per year per family , "triggering a violent contraction in domestic consumption and putting the social stability of many single-income households at risk."
