Higher transport costs, even 20% higher than a few months ago: the entry into force of the ETS (the European tax to reduce polluting emissions) is bringing Sardinian companies to their knees. The increase in shipping companies' rates is reflected both in company expenses and in exports.

"The goal of decarbonization is a commitment that we are all called to respect, but there must be sharing. In this way the burdens are downloaded onto agricultural products and the island's agri-food sector", explains Stefano Taras, president of Confagricoltura.

During a press conference, the negative effects of the ETS on various sectors were illustrated. Rice producers speak of "unfair competition" and a situation that favors companies in northern Italy. Similar conditions also for wine companies and cheese producers: "We pay 15-20 cents more per kilo for transport," observed Gavino Nieddu, director of the Cao Formaggi cooperative.
And the future is bleak: in 2026 the European tax is set to increase.
