Thwarted love, money issues, racism, conflict between religions: the drama written by Shakespeare at the end of the 16th century retains an unchanged strength. And it demands great performers. Like Franco Branciaroli who arrives on the island with "The Merchant of Venice" thanks to the Great Prose circuit promoted by CeDac Sardegna. Produced by Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia - CTB / Centro Teatrale Bresciano and Teatro de Gli Incamminati , the title adapted by director Paolo Valerio debuts in Sardinia tomorrow at the Teatro Comunale of Sassari starting at 9pm. The drama will then move to the Massimo in Cagliari where it will be on stage from Wednesday to Sunday. Double show on Friday, at 4.30pm and 8.30pm.

Franco Branciaroli plays Shylock , the Jewish banker/usurer who challenges Antonio (the merchant of the title), his enemy and mocker, forced to turn to him for a loan in favor of his friend Bassanio, asking as a penalty "a pound of flesh" . On stage Piergiorgio Fasolo (Antonio) and Francesco Migliaccio (Salerio / Doge), Emanuele Fortunati , Stefano Scandaletti , Lorenzo Guadalupi , Giulio Cancelli , Valentina Violo , Dalila Reas , Mauro Mal winter and Mersila Sokoli.

«Doesn't a Jew have eyes? Does it not have hands, organs, limbs, senses, affections and passions? Doesn't he perhaps feed on the same food as a Christian?", are some sentences of the famous monologue in which Shylock claims his belonging to the human race, with identical vulnerability and sensitivity, on a par with Christians who consider themselves or at least they pose as superior beings, but they have taught him the art of revenge: a stranger in a strange land, marginalized and ultimately forced to practice one of the rare professions allowed to Jews, this antihero who embodies the stereotypes linked to his religion and his culture, by persisting in its cruel and absurd request, transforms itself from victim into executioner.
