Formula 1 of the Sea returns to Cagliari after 22 years.
Arand triumphs in the Sardinia Region Grand Prix of ItalyEstonian Stefan Arand triumphed at the Regione Sardegna GP of Italy, the opening round of the F1H2O World Championship. The Formula One racing series returned to Cagliari after a 22-year absence and provided two thrilling days of racing on the waters of Su Siccu.
Yesterday saw qualifying and the two Sprint Races, won by Shaun Torrente and Rusty Wyatt, and today the most eagerly awaited event, the Regione Sardegna Gran Prix of Italy.
It was a GP full of surprises, where after a rolling start (chosen given the sea conditions) that compacted the group, there were several yellow flags, the result of no fewer than five rollovers—very dramatic but without consequences for the drivers—that occurred during the hard-fought race. Completing the podium were Australian Grant Trask, also of Sharjah Team, who thus scored a one-two, and Polish driver Bartek Marszalek of Stromoy Racing. An excellent fourth place went to the only Italian on the grid, Alberto Comparato. Among the five who had to retire due to rollovers, which occurred in the very early stages of the race, with 30 laps remaining on the 1,800-meter course, were Wyatt and four-time world champion Torrente, who, after yesterday's victories and in light of their great talent, had much higher expectations.
