«From today call me Alfredo, with an o, because I am Italian like you».
This was announced by Alfred Duncan, former midfielder for Cagliari and Fiorentina, now playing for Venezia, after officially becoming an Italian citizen.
Duncan sealed with this joke the ceremony of the oath of citizenship and the signing of the documents, which took place yesterday at the Municipality of Pescia (Pistoia) in front of the mayor Riccardo Franchi.
Pescia is the city where Duncan has always maintained residence since he arrived in Italy in 2009.
Born in Accra, Ghana, on March 10, 1993, he was taken into foster care, when he was still 15, by a local family, the Giustis, where the head of the family Leonardo is still his agent.
Duncan (19 appearances in rossoblù in 2021) almost immediately began his career as a footballer in the Inter youth team. Among the teams he played for are also Livorno, Sassuolo, Sampdoria.
"I met an exceptional boy - said Mayor Franchi -, who loves Italy, a country to which he truly owes so much. For him, who shows that he is still a humble person, almost someone next door, it is a dream come true, after years of commitment, sacrifice and work". "And in front of us - reports the mayor - he concluded the ceremony by telling everyone that now we can safely call him Alfredo and no longer Alfred".
