«With the hard work and maximum commitment on the part of the technicians, we can say that we are winning the battle to combat locust infestations, to protect our crops». Thus the regional councilor for agriculture, Valeria Satta , who wanted to take stock and take stock of what has been achieved in recent months to combat grasshoppers.
«From the first answers and the first interviews it seems that the grasshopper population has decreased significantly compared to last year. Of course, the problem will remain endemic to the regional territory. This is why constant work will have to be carried out up to a decisive reduction of the phenomenon ».
Collaboration with FAO , which has experience in combating locusts in 40 countries and since 1947, was of the utmost importance . At our request, FAO brought a team of scientists, especially entomologists, to Sardinia , to give answers and find solutions to this endemic and recurring scourge of our island. The operational plan started this year took place with the fight using plant protection products at the first appearance of the forms of nymphs last March 22, therefore considerably ahead of 2022, when the first invasions began on April 27".
Very important, according to Satta, was «the use of agro-meteorological forecasting models, thanks to the collaboration between CRS4, LAORE and ARPAS, which made it possible to hit the insect as soon as it emerged from the eggs, thanks to the monitoring action performed by Forestas staff (about 100 men) who collaborated with the technicians of Laore (about thirty). The fight with plant protection products continued throughout the month of June and early July, reaching a number of about 4,000 interventions".
«It should be noted - the conclusion - that the technicians of Laore, Forestas and companies specialized in phytosanitary control worked for three consecutive months without interruption, not even on public holidays. In June, thanks to the use of Civil Protection personnel and the Barracellari companies of the Municipalities involved, the soil and useful insects (antagonists) were monitored . These actions will serve to understand where the locusts have laid their eggs to set up next year's fight, also using plowing where soil conditions allow ».
