May 12th is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day, a chronic condition that affects 2-5% of the world's population, particularly young and adult women (seven times more likely than men) (aged between 30 and 50 years). It is characterized by a very heterogeneous clinical picture, ranging from muscle and bone pain, with possible joint stiffness, to tiredness, tingling in the upper and lower limbs, headache, non-restorative sleep, overactive bladder, menstrual pain, and poor resistance to exercise. physicist. It is a difficult clinical condition to diagnose: there is no specific test, and the symptoms are often attributed to other diseases. In Italy there are two million people affected by fibromyalgia, considered in 2nd-3rd place among rheumatic diseases.

At the end of February, the Chamber of Deputies approved a motion for the recognition of fibromyalgia as a disabling disease, an essential element to support future support projects for patients and their caregivers, as underlined by the Minister for Disabilities Alessandra Locatelli. The objective is to include this chronic condition among the essential levels of assistance to exempt patients from paying healthcare costs.

The Awareness Day aims to raise public awareness and support research aimed at finding a cure.
