Farewell to Francesco Casu, a visionary director who managed to portray Sardinia with a different, original perspective, starting from its traditions and culture.
He was born in Cagliari in 1965. After graduating in Literature, he studied in Paris and Cologne at the Kunsthochschule für Medien, a school of art and film. In 1997, he began working in the audiovisual and multimedia communications sector with Codex Multimedia. It's difficult to summarise his artistic career, rich in works and projects born of extraordinary talent and a curious, free spirit. He collaborated with Romeo Scaccia and met Maria Lai and Paolo Fresu. He loved the exchange, the magical blend of art and technology, and contributions of every kind that could enrich his visual narratives.
He designed and directed the interactive exhibitions "Abitare il Libro" and "Abitare la Musica," which toured the world. He has created video sculpture projects and overseen the multimedia design and direction of the Sardinian Wine Museum. He has also spearheaded countless initiatives, the fruit of his pure talent.
He also created the special features for the DVD "La grazia," produced by L'Unione Sarda . And again for the Unione Sarda publishing group, together with ethnomusicologist Marco Lutzu, he edited the Multimedia Encyclopedia of Sardinian Music, a work spanning over thirty volumes, including paperbacks, DVDs, and audio CDs.
He said of himself: "I am a multimedia director, which means I create films, videos, and documentaries, and I use digital and interactive technologies to create installations that make the cultural experience unique and engaging." In February 2025, at the Basilica of San Saturnino in Cagliari, he explored the theme of the humanization of technology as part of the "Dialogues" organized by the National Museums.
Director and artist. A pioneer and forerunner of languages and forms of communication. He outlined horizons to be observed, today and in the future, with great interest. A precious legacy. Many on social media paid tribute to him with emotion and regret.
