Farewell to the former mayor of Genoa , originally from Ozieri, Giuseppe Pericu .

A well-known administrative lawyer and university professor , he died at the age of 84: he had been ill for some time.

He led the city for two terms from 1997 to 2007 (therefore also during the 2001 G8 events ) with the center-left coalition: the first time with 51.5% of the votes, the second with 60.3%. In 1994 during the XII Legislature he was elected deputy for the Italian Socialist Party and in 2007 he joined the Democratic Party. He was currently president of the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts.

It was also the mayor who managed the process that led Genoa to be proclaimed European Capital of Culture in 2004 . He was a member of the BoD of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and of the BoD of Carige representing the majority shareholder Vittorio Malacalza.

"Beppe Pericu is gone, a gentleman, a friend, a capable and intelligent administrator - is the memory of the Minister of Labor Andrea Orlando -. He was the mayor of the rebirth of Genoa, the leader who knew how to speak to the city wounded by G8. We will miss him very much ".
