For over 40 years, she was a point of reference for generations of students. Giovanna Sotgiu, who died at the age of 100, was the first professor of Latin Epigraphy in Italy . Her research focused on Roman Sardinia through the systematic study of epigraphic sources.

The Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the Metropolitan City of Cagliari and the Provinces of Oristano and Southern Sardinia recalls that " she is responsible for the seminal work 'Latin Inscriptions of Sardinia' (1961-1968), a tool that remains essential for any study of Sardinian epigraphy. With philological rigor and profound historical awareness, Professor Sotgiu has provided Sardinia with an updated and critically examined epigraphic corpus, overcoming its reliance on nineteenth-century volumes and laying the foundation for all subsequent research into the island's history in the Roman era."

Giovanna Sotgiu leaves behind a scientific legacy that has been recognized by the international community.
