Another of the heroes of the 1970 Scudetto has left us.

Cesare Poli has died at the age of 79. Cagliari Calcio announced this in a statement on its website.

Born in Breganze, in the Vicenza area, on January 6, 1945, as a young man he practiced athletics, achieving good results. Then he switched to football and in 1965 he joined Lanerossi Vicenza, where he played for two years before moving to Inter, where he was affected by a bad injury.

In 1969, together with Gori and Domenchini, he moved to Cagliari. And it was an immediate championship , a title to which Poli contributed with 11 appearances . Loved by Scopigno and all the coaches for his great athletic skills and his versatility (he could play full-back, midfielder or pure defender).

"He was the twelfth starter, his ability to cover multiple roles led him to be so. He was a very easy-going person, a friend to everyone and physically strong", this is how Gigi Riva spoke of him .

In 1971-72 Poli returned to Lanerossi, where he played for two championships before returning to the rossoblù in 1973, where he played another two seasons before retiring due to a serious injury, a ruptured Achilles tendon. In total he played 99 games with the Cagliari jersey. Like many teammates of the historic championship team, Poli decided to settle in Sardinia after his farewell to football .

Once he hung up his boots, Cagliari Calcio recalls, "Poli never wanted to kick a ball again, not even with some amateur team. He never made a secret of the fact that he loved athletics more than football."

"Ciao Cece, forever a red and blue heart", thus the Sardinian club concludes its statement.

President Tommaso Giulini also dedicated a post to him on his social profiles: "One of our eternal heroes. Rossoblù forever and adopted by Cagliari: goodbye Cesare Poli, thank you for everything you did fighting for our colors," he wrote.
