Farewell to Carlo Pepi, art critic and one of Modigliani's greatest experts, who died today at the age of 88.
Pepi, a Tuscan of Sardinian origin , was the only expert who in 1984 managed to unmask the famous “Modigliani heads hoax” , works attributed by most to the artist but which instead turned out to have been created by a group of young people from Livorno as a joke.
In 2017, another demonstration of his expertise and knowledge of the great artist was demonstrated: a Modigliani exhibition in Genoa was closed early because Pepi reported that a third of the paintings on display were fake. This sparked a legal case brought forward by the Genoa prosecutor's office, which also seized 21 paintings. Two years ago, all six defendants were acquitted, and an appeal is now pending, while only eight paintings were deemed fake.
