Farewell to Alex Zanardi : the former Formula 1 driver and iconic Paralympic champion has died at the age of 59. His family made the sad announcement.
Zanardi, born in Bologna, dedicated himself to paracycling after a car accident in 2001 that resulted in the amputation of his legs, winning four gold medals and two silver medals at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
In 2020, another tragic accident occurred: a collision with a truck while he was participating in a charity race he had organized on his handbike on the streets of Siena.
"It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the sudden passing of Alessandro Zanardi yesterday evening, May 1st," the statement reads. "Alex passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his loved ones. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to all those who have expressed their sympathy during this time and requests respect for their grief and privacy during this time of mourning."
Numerous messages of condolences followed the news. "Italy has lost a great champion and an extraordinary man, capable of transforming every trial in life into a lesson in courage, strength, and dignity. Alex Zanardi was able to get back on track time and time again, facing even the toughest challenges with determination, clarity, and uncommon fortitude. With his sporting achievements, his example, and his humanity, he gave us all much more than a victory: he gave us hope, pride, and the strength to never give up," Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on social media.
